Captain's column

Daegu Dragons RFC is led by Lee Gaskell.

Welcome to the Daegu Dragons RFC website.

Being born and bred in Christchurch, New Zealand, rugby has been a huge part of my life. It was with great enjoyment back in 2004, after 2 years teaching in South Korea, that Frank Pescatello founded the Daegu Dragons RFC. It provided an outlet for both civilian and military expats to get their fix of playing code instead of just struggling to stream it or find it on TV, and a was great opportunity to tour the peninsula and take in the sights that your average visitor might not come across.

Fast forward 6 years, with Pescatello transferred off to greener (?) pastures, and I have risen from slack-training player to slack-training captain. In the broadest sense of the term, too, as there are a lot of knowledgeable voices I’m glad to draw on in the team. The team was resurrected in late 2011 and the shared enthusiasm of the Busan Bandits and Jeonnam Aliens allowed us to get up and running with regular “off-season” fixtures. We joined the Korean Tens League, competed in by 5 civilian and 5 military teams nationwide, in 2012, and have proudly improved at each tournament. The team’s highlight thus far was twice being recognized as the best performing team at the Daejeon/Cheongju Knights’ Tournament in May and at the Osan Air Force Base Tournament in September.

Special thanks to JJ’s Bar & Grill  and Rocktape for their sponsorship and support, and to former Dragons MVP Edward Pye and part-time Photoshopper Curtis Broker for designing our crest.

The nature of most of our jobs in South Korea leads to inevitable player turnover, so we always welcome new recruits of all abilities, experience and fitness levels!

Cheers

Lee.
